Cherryland
VFW Post 2780 was chartered into the Veterans of Foreign Wars on March
25, 1933 with 43 members. Theodore P. Miller was the first
commander, taking office with the installation of the Charter.
From March 1933 to March 1941, Cherryland Post 2780 held their meetings
at members' homes. On March 10, 1941, the membership signed a
Warranty Deed with the Knights of Columbus Council 1213 to purchase the
property at 440 West Front Street , Traverse City, MI. Everything
inside the building was also purchased, allowing the K of C to rent the
building and contents for ten years to hold meetings.
On July 2nd 1988, we were honored to have the State Commander Edmund
Gucwa along with many other dignitaries, comrades and friends present for the
dedication of our new and present Post home at 3400 Veterans Dr., Traverse City,
MI. This new building was made possible by the selling of bonds along with the
dedication and hard work of our members .
In June of 1996, Judith A. Flynn became the first woman to serve as
Commander. She served with the Army Nurse Corps during Desert
Storm.
This Post was a leader at District, State and National levels. Seven Post
members served as District Commander Otto Kropp, Robert Kaley, Robert K. Smith,
Ed Schumacher, Cecil McGoon, Gerald Klosowski and Jack Pickard. The post also
had the honor of having Don Faust serve as the State Hospital Chairman then Bill
and Shirley Thomas became the State Chairmen and with the help of Walt &
Margaret Adams, Wilma King, Deanna Galla and Rosie Merritt. Shirley was the
Ladies Auxiliary State Chairman for 25 years. We are the home Post of two past State Commanders,
Cecil McGoon and Jack Pickard. Jack also served as a member of the National
Council of Administration for two years.
The post membership has grown from 43 to over 900 partly due to our involvement
in our community and our commitment to our Veterans. Some of our yearly programs
are the raising and lowering of over 500 flags on Memorial weekend, raising
funds and donating uniforms to a school band, donating flags to several schools,
sponsorship of the Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen scholarship programs for
students in both Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties, working with Scouts and
Young Marines and with the Toys For Tots program. In 2007 we helped collect 189
bicycles for the Toys for Tots program setting a record since they had never hit
100 before we got involved.
We have a Military Assistance Program that is second to none. We have shipped
over 1500 boxes of goodies to our troops overseas during the last 4 years and
spent over $21,000.00 on the cost of postage. All of these funds were donated by
other organizations, members and businesses.
It has
been a great 75 years as Cherryland VFW Post 2780
